A university at sea – Arctic Six students join the One Ocean Expedition
In April 2025, The Arctic Six nominated master’s and doctoral students from the Arctic Six universities to take part in a month-long course aboard the ship S/S Statsraad Lehmkuhl, which will voyage across the North-West Passage as part of the One Ocean Expedition.
After the application deadline on 11 April, the hosting university, UiT – the Arctic University of Norway, selected 27 participants from five Arctic universities in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, all of which are members of the Arctic Six alliance.
One group will board the S/S Statsraad Lehmkuhl in August and voyage for one month between Nuuk, Greenland, and Cambridge Bay, Canada. A second group will sail between Cambridge Bay and Whittier, Alaska. Onboard, they will take part in the course “Arctic Future Pathfinders – A Journey Through the Northwest Passage”.
The course “Arctic Future Pathfinders – A Journey Through the Northwest Passage” is a 10 ECTS course for master’s and doctoral students. It is linked to Norway’s Arctic Ocean 2050 initiative and the upcoming International Polar Year in 2032/33. The course will enable the students and young academics to become skilled Arctic researchers.
As the largest collaborative body between universities in northern Sweden, Norway, and Finland, one of The Arctic Six's main tasks is to promote interdisciplinary collaborations across the North.
Enabling young students and researchers to study and do research in the Arctic from interdisciplinary perspectives aboard the One Ocean Expedition is a major step in that direction. The Arctic Six is proud to be a part of the future of Arctic research and education.
In August, we will publish reports about the experiences of the participants from The Arctic Six universities during their journey through the North-West Passage.
